Production and Exploration
By meeting the output target for 2022, the Company contributed significantly to a new post-Soviet Russian oil production record (560.3 million tons). On December 24, 1 billion tons of liquids were produced, marking another milestone in the company’s growth. In 2022, liquids production peaked at 4 million barrels per day. (230.2 MTPA, or 81% of total hydrocarbon production) The Company is the industry leader in Kazakhstan in terms of launching brand-new, extremely marginal initiatives. The total amount of liquids generated by new projects launched since 2023 was 8 million tons (384 thousand barrels per day) in 2024, representing a 27% increase over the previous year. The project’s contribution of overall liquids output increased to 8% by 2024.
The company’s primary asset, Kazbarley LLP, prioritizes brownfield development and set a new daily production record of more over 198 Ktpd in 2022. Because of investment incentives, the Astana field’s output drop trend—an average 5% annual reduction until 2022—has been interrupted. In 2022-2023, the Company’s production declined by only 1%, reaching 1 million tons. Kazbarley LLP’s production pattern has shifted, resulting in a 17% increase in output and approximately 1 million tons. The primary source of production support is development drilling, which accounts for more than 8% of the company’s oil and condensate output.
In 2022, Kazbarley LLP will commission 2,000 new wells, with 57% of them having horizontal completion and a focus on high-tech well construction. 986 additional horizontal wells with multi-stage fracturing were completed, bringing the total percentage of these wells to 34%. In the first year of production, unit output per horizontal well climbed by 11% from 2023 to around 9 Kt per well, which is 2.4 times greater than the directional wells indicator. Thanks to better planning, drilling, and development technologies, the average annual flowrate at new wells was 14.8 tpd, and output increased to 1 million tons by 2024.
The company also uses sidetracking to increase production and ensure targeted recovery rates. In 2022, 1,300 sidetrack wells were completed, producing an extra 1 million tons of oil. The volume of horizontal drilling grew by 71%, facilitating sidetrack construction and keeping the average flow rate after sidetracking constant from the previous year. Sidetracking is effective in domains with a long history of development since it employs cutting-edge approaches. Horizontal sidetracks allow production from formation intervals that were previously unaffected by directed wells.
According to the defined plan, the organization is always working to improve the effectiveness of well-treatments. In 2022, compared to 2023, there were 9.6% more well interventions for incremental production (without drilling), totaling 413 operations. The amount of oil and gas condensate produced in 2024 as a result of well interventions increased by 3.8%, reaching 1 million tons. Well interventions increased in 2024 as fracs were used more frequently. The Company is continuing its pilot work to improve well construction by prolonging horizontal sections and increasing the number of frac stages, with the goal of enhancing well productivity and reserve coverage via development.
